Our devices assist in the delivery of chemotherapy, blood products, antibiotics, and nutrition.

    Summary of Position with General Responsibilities

    This position is primarily responsible for fabrication of class 101, 102, 103, and 104 injection molds which address production volumes from 100k to over 1 million cycles.  The highest levels of accuracy, precision, quality, workmanship, and attention to detail all apply to the mold making position. 

     

     

    Other duties include developing prototype and production gauge and mold tooling concepts, making tool material and heat treatment recommendations, providing gauge and mold design for manufacture and assembly recommendations, and performing final mold tooling assembly and evaluation.  A mold maker will likely specialize and become a department expert on a core production mold making technology such as hard milling, wire EDM, and/or sinker EDM. 

     

    This position assists R&D Engineering with optimum project and program tooling requirements, process development, and tooling and process qualification to support the short and long term needs and goals of the business.  The incumbent will play a significant role and make meaningful contributions to designing, developing, qualifying, and sustaining unique manufacturing process and technologies. 

     

    The incumbent must perform with minimal supervision and be capable of working with small precision components with close tolerances.  Demonstrated CAD/CAM proficiency, a willingness and ability to learn, and ability mentor and develop others are all essential skills and capabilities.  Good communication and organizational skills and the ability to contribute in a cross functional team environment are also all essential skills and capabilities.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Fabricates class 101, 102, 103, and 104 injection molds.
    • Ability to produce the highest levels of accuracy, precision, quality, workmanship in their work.
    • Develops prototype and production gauge and mold tooling concepts, makes tool material and heat treatment recommendations, provides gauge and mold design for manufacture and assembly recommendations, and performs final mold tooling assembly and evaluation.
    • Provides effective technical support for vendor and customer exchanges.
    • Ability to become a department/division expert on a core production mold making technology such as hard milling, wire EDM, and/or sinker EDM.
    • Works effectively with small precision components with close tolerances.
    • Demonstrated CAD/CAM proficiency, a willingness and ability to learn, and ability mentor and develop others.
    • Conceives, develops, designs, fabricates and evaluates prototype and production molds and systems of tools, dies, gages, jigs and fixtures required for safe and cost effective manufacturing of high quality medical device products.
    • Prepares written proposals, concepts and estimates for machine tools, molds, and tooling programs.
    • Consults with R&D Engineering and Operations personnel on tooling and equipment implementation and best practices to assure optimum approaches to cost effective manufacturing.
    • Collaborates with R&D and Operations Engineering personnel in the determination and standardization of product designs or redesigns.
    • Provides operating and maintenance instructions, spare parts lists, and consulting services on construction, training and operation of special tools.
    • Prepares specifications, obtains quotations, analyzes and recommends purchase of machine tools and corresponding tooling packages.

    Basic Qualifications

    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Completion of formal Journeyman level tool making program or machining certification with tool making emphasis PLUS,
    • Three to five (3-5) years of tool making AND two to three (2-3) years of tool design experience or equivalency AND
    • Three to five (3-5) years of class 101, 102, 103, and 104 mold making.
    • Proficient in use of desktop computer workstation with Microsoft Windows® operating system and Microsoft Outlook®, Word®, and Excel®.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software (e.g., MasterCAM®, SurfCAM®, Vitual Gibbs®, CAM Tool, Esprit etc.).
    • Capable user of standard and advanced metrology tools including calipers micrometers, height gauges, gauge blocks, optical comparators, and pin gauges etc.
    • Ability to accurately interpret engineering documentation.
    • Ability to speak, read, and comprehend English.

    The incumbent must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the duties and responsibilities.

    Additional Desirable Qualifications Skills and Knowledge

    • Knowledgeable in molding tooling manufacturing methods including grinding, turning, milling, hard milling, sinker EDM, and wire EDM.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of injection mold tool design and fabrication best practices.
    • Skilled in precision measurement techniques using precision instruments to verify quality of results.
    • Working knowledge and demonstrated abilities with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
    • Working knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, AC and DC wiring, and basic plumbing.
    • In-depth experience in tool design, low-cost tooling, and plastic/rubber mold tooling, jigs and fixtures, materials and processes.
    • Ability to visualize and devise new practices and methods based on established principles.
    • Thorough, detailed analysis and understanding of tool needs and programs.
    • Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
    • Experienced in all phases of common and emerging molding tool room activities including milling, hard milling, turning, surface grinding, plunge EDM, and wire EDM.
    • Demonstrated competence and skill with sinker EDM, wire EDM, and/or 3D surface milling and CAM programming.
    • Capable of contributing to product design efforts.
    • Updates job knowledge and skills by seeking out and participating in educational/training opportunities.
    • Willingness and demonstrated ability to teach and mentor others in mold design and fabrication best practices.
    • Thorough, detailed analysis and understanding of tool needs and programs.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work well with other in a cross functional team environment.

    Physical Demands

    This position is principally in a machine shop environment and requires the incumbent to sit, stand and perform some general office functions. The incumbent may also be required to lift up to twenty five pounds occasionally. The incumbent may be required to stand for extended periods of time. Bending, stooping and reaching are also frequently required.
