  • Overview

    This position provides technical assistance regarding biological assays. Performs environmental tests, supports engineering projects and performs biocompatibility test studies.  Provide technical assistance for microbiology lab.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Determines required biocompatibility testing (includes issuing final reports on test results and completed rationales and compliance statements/documents).
    • Completes, signs, and distributes test reports to Plant Microbiologist.
    • Conducts environmental monitoring testing in the facility.
    • Assists Plant Microbiologist as needed with special projects/ lab needs.
    • Writes and/or maintains laboratory procedures, policies and protocols as assigned.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Working knowledge of testing performed in a microbiology laboratory setting.
    • Proficient in the use of a personal computer with intermediate level of keyboarding skills.
    • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint.
    • Ability to make decisions and work independently.
    • Ability to accurately read and interpret test results.
    • Ability to interpret requests for testing with regard to correct sample identifications.
    • Demonstrated high level of accountability and ownership.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory compliance to include but not limited to QSRs, ISO, OSHA, and FDA.
    • Attention to detail imperative due to improper or unnecessary changes being detrimental to quality.
    • Demonstrates ability to follow GDP and GMP documentation practices.
    • Good oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions.
    • Ability to write simple correspondence.
    • Ability to effectively present technical information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
    • Must be able to interpret technical reports pertaining to microbiological and toxicological studies.
    • Must use sound judgment when interpreting such reports in order to make accurate assessments of acceptance.
    • Must be able to interpret acceptance criteria from domestic (FDA) and international guidelines.

    Additional Desirable Qualifications Skills and Knowledge

    • Associates or Bachelors Degree in a science related field (biology, microbiology, medical laboratory, etc.) highly preferred

    Education and/or Experience

    • High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associates or Bachelors Degree in a science related field (biology, microbiology, medical laboratory, etc.) highly preferred.
    • Working knowledge of testing performed in a microbiology laboratory setting.

    Physical Demands

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands or arms (to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls). The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
    • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 lbs.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and works with toxic or caustic chemicals.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception. Employee cannot be color blind. Requires 20/20 vision (corrected).

    Work Environment

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually low. The Personal Protective Equipment required to perform this job safely includes safety glasses and appropriate shoes.
    • While there may be instances of biohazard exposure, a Hepatitis-B series is required within 6 months of hire date.
