  • Summary of Position with General Responsibilities

    This position performs various service-engineering functions including failure assessment, predictive modeling, process design, and associated tasks to support the service and repair (S&R) of the full range of Bard capital products. The Service Engineer interacts with a cross functional team in order to improve the quality of Bard S&R from the initial product design until the end of the product’s useful life. 

    Essential Job Functions

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:


    • Conduct initial assessment of product failures and interpret the data in order to determine root cause and to understand potential risks to patient safety, design quality issues, and potential for repeat failures
    • Investigate failure modes to develop predictive analytics in order to improve design, service procedures, supplier quality, and to assist the business in forecasting repair costs
    • Work directly with sustaining engineering and manufacturing to improve repair cycle time, process yield, and drive cost reductions
    • Work with the appropriate Division and Manufacturer to establish guidelines for and to develop internal capability and risk management for servicing new products both domestically and internationally
    • Perform benchmark testing and test method development for to support failure investigations, service process improvements, corrective actions, and to assist in validating new materials and components related to the servicing of capital devices.
    • Collaborate with R&D and the product design teams to incorporate design for serviceability into all new product introductions
    • Supporting the material management process through understanding demand and forecast and coordinating with procurement leaders
    • In partnership with the product teams, R&D, and marketing , support the lifecycle management process for assigned products
    • Support product acquisitions and service center transfers, as required
    • Review service procedures and processes vis-à-vis failure modes in order to improve, simplify, and remove waste from the service methodologies
    • Develop testing, test equipment, and associated documentation to support service and repair
    • Assist the S&R organization drive continuous improvement and innovation
    • Other duties may be assigned according to the needs of the business


    Quality Specific Functions:


    • Maintain awareness and comply with Bard’s Quality Management System, specific Quality policies, and any applicable laws and regulations as they apply to the position
    • Risk manager for the Service processes with a working knowledge of ISO 14971
    • Complete any planned quality and compliance training within the required deadlines
    • Identify and report any quality or compliance concerns immediately to the Quality organization
    • Special assignments as determined by business needs

    Basic Qualifications

    • Proficient in the use of a personal computer with intermediate level of keyboarding skills, MS Excel, MS Word, MS Access
    • Team oriented, with effective communication and interpersonal skills
    • Strong technical and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to manage multiple deliverables under tight deadlines
    • Ability to work in a matrix organization
    • Fluent English (reading, writing, verbal)
    • Knowledge of quality and safety regulation
    • Previous experience in healthcare device service preferred
    • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status

    Education and/or Experience

    • BS in electrical or mechanical engineering from a four-year college or university
    • Minimum of three years experience preferred
    • Lean Six Sigma background is preferred
    • Documented success and development in previous engineering roles
    • Understands electronic equipment down to the component level
    • Experience with process simulations
    • Experience testing processes and components
    • Background that includes developing and documenting test procedures
    • Understanding of lifecycle management and design-for-serviceability
    • CAD or auto-CAD skills
    • Understanding of statistics and the ability to apply statistics to practical scenarios


    Physical Demands

    • Employee may be required to sit, bend, stoop, use keyboard, see, talk, and hear
    • May occasionally lift objects up to 25 pounds
    • This position works in an office environment with many tasks performed in design and manufacturing centers
    • The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate
    • Travel 20-30%, as dictated by the needs of the business
