Summary of Position with General Responsibilities

Under direct supervision and guidance, this co-op will provide an opportunity to be exposed to the medical device field and offer hands on experience working within the Research & Development group in an Engineering capacity. As a co-op in the R&D department, you will have the opportunity to use state of the art tools and take advantage of training courses offered on-site. Working with cross-functional product development teams and alongside experienced engineers, you will contribute to design solutions and the advancement of new product development projects. This individual would be responsible for compiling, analyzing and reporting operational test and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified products, processes or materials. You will be assigned to specific product and/or support teams.

Essential Job Functions

  • Undertakes and successfully completes simple or basic project/product development tasks to include any of the following: developing and writing test methods, building and evaluating product prototypes, developing and documenting new product concepts, documenting of all test results and assembly processes.
  • May assist in inventing / creating concepts and designs/approaches for new products/processes/test methods.
  • Designs, procures and fabricates simple tooling and fixtures.
  • Designs and coordinates engineering tests and experiments.
  • Prepares standard reports/documentation to communicate results to technical community.
  • Travels to and participates in User and Pre-clinical Labs
  • Completes basic tasks on engineering documentation.
  • Train technicians/operators on new processes and/or test procedures.
  • Identifies areas for improvement, suggests solutions and submits idea records.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

In order to be eligible for the R&D Co-op position, the candidate must be enrolled in an accredited college/institution and be in good academic standing pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Only students in their Sophomore year or above will be considered. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required (or 4.0 for those enrolled in programs with a 5.0 scale). The student must be available to work during session indicated and demonstrated leadership/participation in campus programs and/or community service activities.


Session: 2018 Spring Co-Op Program (January through June 2018). Student must be available to work for a 6 month assignment - Monday through Friday, 8:15 am to 5:00 pm.


This position is located in Warwick, RI and student will be required to provide his/her own transportation. Monthly commuter allowance available to those students traveling over 50 miles one way. When traveling to other locations travel expenses will be reimbursed following corporate policy. Davol Inc. and C.R.
